Microsoft to Buy Yahoo? The Saga Continues
The will they or won’t they saga continues to hover over the heads of Yahoo and Microsoft, leaving many of us, especially Internet Marketing companies wondering what would happen to Yahoo if it ends up in the hands of Microsoft. Early in 2008 Microsoft made a bid to purchase Yahoo, which was subsequently rejected by the Yahoo board. Further bids were made and rejected until it appeared that a deal was about to be struck at around $5 billion. However, recent sources suggest that Yahoo has now ended all talks with Microsoft regarding the takeover because ‘Microsoft was only interested in purchasing Yahoo’s search business, not all of the company’. So, is this the end of the matter? Who knows. Only time will tell but if Yahoo does end up in the hands of Microsoft then it will be interesting to see what happens to the brand and the way in which its search algorithms alter. The latter is definitely the most intriguing issue from a search engine optimisation perspective. At present Yahoo contains a far more advanced search engine algorithm when compared to Microsoft’s troublesome system. This makes Yahoo’s keyword results far more effective, offering site users a greater quality of site for what they have searched for. Microsoft’s results, in comparison, are iffy at best, which explains why they are so desperate to purchase Yahoo. And of course, how else can Microsoft close the continuing gap between Google and themselves? Purchase the second most popular search engine of course, then at least Microsoft should start receiving around 25% of all online searches. How Google must be quaking in their boots.
